What is spiritual warfare

For those of you who are old enough to remember, in the 1970 the comedian Flip Wilson had a TV comedy show and one of his favorite skits involved his alter ego Geraldine Jones who often declared that "the devil made her do it." This became a very popular saying during the '70's and 80's. Whenever someone did or said something that was not acceptable they would explain the action with "The devil made me do it."

So is it possible for the devil to make things happen in our lives? Or is this just a nice little saying or thought to stop one from feeling guilty about something they have said? Or is it a way of passing the blame to someone or something else when they have acted inappropriate?

There has long been an interest in the things of the spiritual. Many ancient civilizations went to great lengths to protect them selves from the influence of evil spirits. Many traditional observances have been borne out of these rituals and acts. But does these evil being truly exist as so many people believe? And are these beings capable of influencing our lives? Ancient Indian tribes had many different evil spirits that they believed could hinder an influence people places and things.

In order for one to believe that there are evil spirits they must first believe that there are demons. Many references are made into day’s society about people dealing with their personal demons. Can a person have a Personal Demon?

Before we draw a conclusion to that question let’s first find out what is a Demon?

Demons are evil spirits that belong to a satanic kingdom ruled by Satan and operating on earth and in heavenly places. The Greek word for Demon is Diamonion as is defined (Strong’s Concordance #1140) as:

  • the divine power, deity, divinity
  • a spirit, a being inferior to God, superior to men
  • evil spirits are the messengers and ministers of the devil

There are many places in the Bible that gives us a look into the world of the Demonic and their activities. Ephesians 6:12 tells us that ‘we wrestle not against flesh and blood (humans) but rather against rulers of the darkness and spiritual wickedness in high places.’

From the reference above we see that there is a battle being raged and it is not with humans. In yet another Bible reference, Luke Chapter 17:15-18. We read a storywere a man came to Jesus because his son whom he called a lunatic needed healing. Jesus rebuked the devil and he departed and the child was healed from that moment. In the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel chapter 16 we read were an evil spirit troubled the king of Israel Saul.

Consider the above references and then decide is there a spiritual warfare? Can evil spirits influence the lives and actions of people? If so what do we need to do to make sure we are victorious in this battle.
